The average Australian spends around $1,200 a month on food and other essentials, according to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data.
But it’s not all about food and drink.
Some of the items we’re spending more on are essential to keeping ourselves alive, said Mark Evans, managing director of the National Farmers Union’s Food Centre.
“We’re spending on things like sunscreen, sunscreen filters, water bottles, toothpaste, hair products, shampoo and so on,” he said.
Mr Evans said the average person spends around half of their budget on the essentials and a lot of people don’t think about that.
“People often say to us, ‘I’m so busy I can’t afford to buy anything else’,” he said, adding there are other things they could be doing that would be more important.
He said people often think they need to pay more for things like clothes or furniture but it’s the things that they really need.
“For example, if you’re going to spend $100 a week on clothes, you’d be spending a lot more than that on things you’re actually using,” Mr Evans explained.
“You’d be wasting a lot less money.”
The average person will spend around $4,300 a year on essentials.

About half of all Australians will eat a meal or snack on a daily basis, according the National Survey of Household Expenditure and Productivity, a survey of households conducted by the Australian Bureau, and more than half will eat out at least once a week.
The average household will spend about $4.25 a day on food.
Mr Johnson said it’s important to remember that many people are not spending on food in bulk.
“They’re buying a variety of things,” he told 7.30.
“I think one of our biggest challenges is when you see the trend towards less expensive options,” he added.
“If you think about how many people have an iPad and have a TV, or how many have a microwave and have an oven, that’s where we’re missing out.”
Food banks are helping people get through the tough times ahead.
The National Farmers Federation has more than 2,200 members and helps about 500 food banks across Australia.
They have also helped people get their kids through school.
The organisation has launched a campaign to raise awareness of food banks.
Mr Edwards said he thought people were struggling because they didn’t think they could afford to purchase essential goods.
“Most of the times it’s just because they don’t have the money to buy that or that they’re not going to get their rent,” he explained.
