India’s top-earning businessperson, the richest person in the country, is using his billions to buy land and buy his wife’s house.
The family, including the billionaire Mukesh Ambani, has been spending vast amounts of cash on land and building up a sprawling business empire in the south-west of the country.
Mr Ambani is spending up to $1 billion a year to buy the land in the state of Haryana, which includes the state capital of Lucknow, and also buy the homes of his wife and daughter.
Mr and Mrs Ambani bought land in Lucknow in 2010 for Rs 6,000 crore, but later bought more land and built up the business empire, a state official said.
They bought the house of their daughter, who is now in her 30s, for Rs 10 crore and a house in the city of Luckpuri for Rs 20 crore, the official said, declining to be named.
Mr Kamal Agarwal, the state’s land acquisition officer, said that the family is also investing in more than a dozen other properties in the area.
He said the couple have spent at least $1.5 billion on land in Haryanvi Pradesh, about 60 km (35 miles) to the north of Luck.
